MedPAC considers eliminating
in SNF, ASC updates December 12, 2002 The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) is considering recommending to Congress that it eliminate the update to payment rates for skilled nursing facility (SNF) services for fiscal year (FY 2004). At its meeting in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 12 and 13, MedPAC staff members said that they would recommend that the Secretary of HHS develop a new classification system for care in SNFs, including an interim payment system with better balance between rehabilitation and non-rehabilitation groups. The latter recommendation includes the proviso that Congress give the Secretary the authority to remove some or all of the 6.7 percent payment add-on currently applied to rehabilitation RUG-III groups and reallocate some portion of the money to the non-rehabilitation RUG-III groups. MedPAC will deliver its final recommendations to Congress in March 2003. |
